Hasbro Announces My Little Pony Retro Rainbow Mane 6
After the My Little Pony 35th Anniversary celebration from last year, Hasbro goes back in time again and announces a brand new set of retro ponies based on the modern mane 6!
The main cast from Friendship is Magic is shaped after ponies from older generation, though with a little twist. Fluttershy, Twilight Sparkle and Rainbow Dash are molded after the classic G1 Firefly pose and Pinkie Pie, Rarity and Applejack are a mixture of G1 and G3 styles. Color-wise the ponies have not changed, but the cutie marks did: they increased in number and size, looking more like the G1 symbols than their current cutie marks.
All ponies come in a single box that is covered with retro-vibes, and even the logo from the first generation! We also received some crazy hi-res images of this set, of which we shared a little compilation below to show you the quality of detail of the figures and packaging.

The My Little Pony Retro Rainbow Mane 6 collection will be an Amazon exclusive and release on the first of September. Pre-orders are available for $24.99.

Together with this new set comes the premiere of My Little Pony: The Retro Show, a free weekly show where Hasbro looks back on the history of My Little Pony from the 80's and 90's.

And if you still have more thirst for retro My Little Pony, why not take a look at our own book My Little Pony Collectibles, where we take a look at the rich history of MLP throughout the generations!

    1. Yeah they kinda remind me of g3 ponies

  3. Major mixed feelings about these guys... On one hand, it's a cool little set. The designs look good without context. With context, however...
They look quite a bit like G3s, especially the open-mouthed head mold- it gives me Donkey Pose vibes (and reminds me of those G3/G3.5 hybrid fakies) and doesn't help the already G3-ish body proportions.
The symbols leave a lot to be desired. First of all, Twilight's is just a recolor of G1 Twilight's symbol. The others aren't really altered to fit G1's symbol standards- they're just kinda fused with their previous incarnations. Applejack gets a pass- but Rarity's symbol is literally just Sparkler's. And- perhaps most nitpicky of all- Rainbow Dash's symbol has four colors (the most any G1 had was three) and seems kinda out-of-place because of it. Imagine that somebody put a filter over a GBA game to make it monochrome green and called it a Gameboy de-make. That's what these are like to me.
And of COURSE we're complaining about the molds. Two body molds, two head molds... It's just lazy. Then again, I LOVE rearing ponies, so it isn't all bad.
And then there are little things- like how Twi has a stripe in both her mane and tail when early G1 unicorns (like the one she's based upon) only had one in the mane, the fact that Hasbro's gotten Rainbow Dash's hair colors right like twice, and Applejack's conspicuous lack of freckles- that bug me.
But they're so cute and new and different! How could I NOT want them?
The deciding factor for me will be whether they decided to print symbols on both sides. That detail will win me over, but I can't justify getting such a flawed set otherwise. Unless they make retro characters- then I'll HAVE to get Starshine!

    1. Starshine would be very pretty on that Pegasus mould.

    2. Yeah, my first thought was, "Those are G3s, not G1s …." Which, hey, I do love G3s, but the text talking about the 80s is misleading.

    3. The reason they look so much like G3s is that they aren't based directly on G1s, but the 25th Anniversary artwork created at the end of G3. Due to likely being drawn by G3 artists, it has some similarities to the G3 art style. This artwork features thinner bodies, more angular legs, bigger heads and eyes, and other subtle differences that these molds accentuate. They aren't intended to look like G3s, but, by complete accident, they do. The "G3 style" body mold looks like it's trying to be Moondancer's pose, making the earthlings look a bit like South African ponies. I wouldn't call it false advertising, it's just an unfortunate coincidence that nobody seemed to notice. I'd like them to look more like G1s, but I'm fine with these. They're kind of growing on me!

    4. ... Not exactly. People found the exact G3 unicorn they got the unicorn mold from. They only altered the necks and height to be compatible with the head rotation.

    5. While I agree that they do closely resemble Whistle Wishes and Sunrise Song's pose, I don't believe it's intentional. They couldn't have gotten the mold directly from theirs, either; G3s are larger than G4s (these are only as big as G4s) and it would probably be easier to start from scratch than shrink a G3 body. The shape of the head is off as well: the ears aren't as shapely and the cheeks and eyelids aren't very defined the way G3s' are. I own a Sunrise Song and can confirm the difference in face shape.
Thinking about G4s, it occurs to me that the heads are probably larger so they can be assembled the same way. It's always easier to do things the same way, which is why G3.5s and G4s are built basically the same way, all the way down to the same common factory errors. I wouldn't be surprised to see these with solid legs (like G3.5s and standard-size G4s) rather than hollow legs (like older ponies), although that's probably true anyway due to the size. Remember, G3s were supposed to look like G1s, so it's not unbearably off if there are a few similarities. Though, I am aware that it doesn't bother me as much as it may bother others.

    6. Actually, I just looked at my Sunrise Song, and she's a mirror image of this pose. Rarity's pose is just standing still, and Sweetie Belle's Core 7 pose is different as well. May I ask which figure you're referring to? I can't seem to think of one like this.

    7. No I gotta disagree there. The legs on the Whistle Wishes pose are in a different position, particularly the back. It seems more of a mash up of Valenshy and Dollymix.

    8. Ah, Valenshy is pretty close! I didn't even think about her as I was only thinking about unicorns. The main difference is the angle of the back hoof; on Valenshy, the sole is completely vertical. That said, Valenshy's pose is pretty close to Sweet Pocket/Bubblefish's pose, the back legs are just switched. A lot of poses are similar to poses in previous generations. For example, G3 Rainbow Dash's pose has the legs placed similarly to G1 Posey's pose, but perhaps that's a bad example due to how many similar poses there are. There's a First Tooth baby pose, Dainty's pose, G3 Tangerine Twinkle's pose, and Honeysuckle's pose is mirrored.
As for Sunrise Song, she is a bit different besides being mirrored, but when I first saw the Twilight, my brain immediately compared her to that pose. That said, I initially thought she was Milky Way in the split second before I looked at any context.
The legs don't have the "blobby" quality that G3s do- G3 legs taper a bit and the hooves are more round. The ankle- the spike close to the top of the back leg- isn't as defined. On a G3, the leg kind of "puckers" around it; you don't see that here. I think the reason the legs look more like G3 legs is because the hooves are likely round. G1 hooves are shaped like hooves, so the ankle looks a bit different from these. The curviness of the bottom of the leg doesn't help as it makes the ankle stand out a bit more than it should. G1s would have the back of the leg barely curve, if at all.
The Dollymix comparison is something I won't be able to unsee. I'm ashamed to say I'd forgotten about them! The Dollymix ponies were also a bit of a G1/G3 hybrid, but in this case, they were marketed as G3s (even the G1 characters used G3-style art) instead of G1s. Despite the difference, the similarities are there. I believe, in the case of the Dollymix ponies, they were less G3-ish because their size limited their detail.

    9. I got the SDCC Twilight in this mold, and while she is this weird G1/G3/FiM hybrid, she was way cuter in person, especially when I tamed her hair a bit. These are pretty small, the same size as the older FiM brushables.

    10. Someone pointed out that they're a lot like the old Dollymix moulds. I hafta agree with her assessment.

  4. I got these today. Their hair is terrible. Uneven, very stiff. Symbols are only printed on one side.

  5. These look nothing like the original g1s.

  6. Might be a little late to say this, but these unfortunately are rather cheaply made. The molds are more like fakies than anything else. Symbols are on only one side, no magnet, and the eyes are just stuck on without any concave indent, so they look extremely uneven and odd.

That along with the thin hair and heads that are not proportioned well with the body makes me really sad to see such a great idea gone to waste. Only thing that seemed to undergo quality control is here the box, honestly.
