Kayou Releases Moon Edition 2 Cards and Sweepstakes + REVIEW

We had to go back a long way to find our first interaction with Kayou, and found this post from 2021 where we imported and reviewed a box of My Little Pony trading cards from China. Then, fast forward 4 years to 2025 and Kayou became a cards and merch giant in their mainland with plans to create a globally available My Little Pony card game.

Fast forward again to last week, where we received a press release about the official US release of Kayou's latest My Little Pony Friendship Eternal Cards: Moon Edition 2 series. That's quite a mouthful, so the name might need some explaining.

First of all, these are not part of the (competitive) card game that was announced last year, but are part of the original series of My Little Pony collectible cards series named Friendship Eternal. Over the years many sets have been released, of which multiple also have an English version. Moon Edition 2 is the latest set, and yes, there is also a first Moon Edition set, as well as several others (like Fun Moment and Rainbow Edition).

Sweepstakes

MLP Chase the Magic

While this is not the first English set, it is the first time (that we know of) that Kayou is actively promoting the release, and also officially listing it on Amazon. And that's not all! In celebration of the new series, US release and new card type Shining Celebration Zenith Rare (◇ZR) Kayou launches the Chase the Magic Sweepstakes, which includes one amazing grand-prize!

MLP Shining Celebration Zenith Rare

The first 30 people to pull the Zenith Rare card and are able to verify it on the Kayou website and win a free PSA grading of their card. On top of that the 30 lucky individuals will draw for the grand-prize: collaborating with MLP comic artist Andy Price to design your own trading card, to be released in a future set!

The fine print? This sweepstakes only grants PSA grading and grand-prize entry for the first 30 applicants, is only available to US residents and will end on May 31st 2026, 11:59 PM EST.

If you want to join the sweepstakes you can find the cards in 5-packs on Amazon and select retailers across the US.

Moon Edition 2 Set

MLP Friendship Eternal Cards: Moon Edition 2 Packs

Back to the other cards in the new Moon Edition 2 set, of which there are plenty. Aside from the ◇ZR, there are (from common to rarest) R, HR, SR, SSR, UR, LSR, SGR, ZR and SC card types. The amount of cards per rarity type differ, but in total the set contains 189 different cards to collect, although the ◇ZR is probably a tough card to chase.

You'll notice that all promo images for this set contain G4 ponies, and that is correct. The Friendship Eternal series contains only Friendship is Magic characters, and while Kayou did release G5-themed items and cards, most of their merch revolves around the still incredibly popular 4th generation.

In true Kayou fashion every card has some sort of effect. In most cases this is a holographic finish with stars and symbols, but also include embossed and lenticular variants. And since these are collectible cards, and not used for a competitive game, the back of card also have varying designs and information (without any effects).

Review Packs

With many thanks to Kayou we were able to receive two Moon Edition 2 packs to review for this post and are able to show you the packaging and several rarity types. Even though we are not located in the US, and thus couldn't join the sweepstakes, we were curious to which cards we would pull. Let's take a look!

The shiny effect already starts with the packaging as both the cardboard protector and the packs have a glossy coating. The cardboard sleeve has a very appealing look, but it seems that only Rainbow Dash is featured on the cover for this set. The metallic pack has a simpler look and features a special logo to celebrate 15 years of Friendship is Magic, and on the back there is some information about the possible pack contents and rarity types.

We opened the packs and more reflections welcome us with the R cards on top that have a starry holographic coating all across the card. And while this looks nice, you might be familiar with the downside of one-sided holo cards: bending/curling depending on the humidity. In our case it wasn't too bad, but certainly noticeable. Sleeving the cards, or storing them in a binder certainly helps with this.

Aside from the chance of a slight curl, the cards are pretty sturdy with smoothly rounded edges. The cards have a glossy coating provide little friction, although the back has a slight texture to make sure they don't slip out of your hand.

After the R cards, which will be the most common type you'll find, we got SR cards with a more pronounced holographic effect with cutie marks from the Mane 6. Also commonly included are lenticular cards of HR rarity. These have relatively small ridges, improving the image quality. They really look better than the lenticular stuff we had in the early 2000s.

Next up we have our favorites: SSR and UR have a shiny embossed effect featuring playing card designs (SSR) or a swimming pool theme (UR). According to the back of the pack the SSR series has 54 different designs, so you can actually collect a full deck of playing cards (and perhaps 2 jokers).

And we have one more card, perhaps a ZR?

No, sadly for us we didn't get that lucky (that leaves more for other collectors!), but still managed to pull a LSR of Princess Celestia. This rarity type has gold lines, a holographic background and a glossy embossed finish. And that is the 5th rarity type, so we're wondering how shiny the SGR/ZR/SC/◇ZR cards would be!

That's all for our unpacking and review. If you want to get some packs for yourself, they're available right now!
