MLP Wave 1 Blind Bag Promotional Flyer Pamphlet
There will probably be a few people who have one or more wave 1 blind bag. And some of them might even still have the original promotional pamphlet that came with it (sadly they stopped with this in the later waves). For those who don't have them (anymore), we've made a scan of said pamphlet above the post. Notice anything unusual? Yes. The mane 6 looks totally different from the actual blind bags! After some research I noticed that some promotional images from Hasbro also contained the different mane 6 blind bags (hooray for better quality images!).

As you can see, the mane 6 has more glossy plastic that they actually are (except for Fluttershy, but I'll return to her later in this post). While these could of course be computer rendered images with added glossiness, the other blind bags don't have it. Neither on the pamphlet or loose promotional images.
And it's not the glossy coating that is the most interesting to look at. It's the special molds whats the actual bizarre thing. As far as I can see Twilight Sparkle looks more or less as she is supposed to be, but slightly bigger eyes and a bigger cutie mark. Pinkie Pie also looks liker her actual blind bag, but also with much bigger eyes and perhaps a bit slimmer body mold. Applejack has Pinkie Pie's eyes, much thinner hairbands and very rounded off feet. So much in fact that I bet that this prototype wouldn't stand for longer than a second. Then Rainbow Dash, again with Pinkie's eyes, but her front hooves seem to be in the Applejack pose rather than the pegasus pose. And on top of that her cutie mark is also flipped and actually on her hip, instead of her upper leg like the actual blind bags have. This could mean that that prototype had the wings slightly higher, but I'm not sure on that.
And then there is Rarity, who has a completely different mold than her actual blind bag, with a much bigger mane. So much in fact, that it seems to be partly covering her cutie mark.
And then finally, there is Fluttershy, who looks like her regular blind bag figure, even without gloss.

But why? Googling about didn't help me find any information about these early prototypes, so I'd have to do some speculation on this. Perhaps it could have been that Fluttershy actually had her own mold back when they designed these blind bags (instead of sharing one with Rainbow Dash). And when these came to the end of the designing process, the Fluttershy design had to be scrapped (for whatever reason) and they had to take the regular pegasus mold as a fallback (but adding her cutie marks and eyes of course). Meanwhile the others look so much like their final non-gloss look that they kept the images for the promotional stuff, but they had to change Fluttershy due to the changed design. This is of course my own theory, we'd never know for certain until we speak with someone from Hasbro who can tell us the history of these.

And while we're talking about scrapped designs, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Twilight Sparkle and Pinkie Pie all pretty much look like their actual blind bags. Except for Rarity, who's mane has been squashed into the purple ball it is now. Again, I can't confirm why this happened, but it might have to do something with the width of the blind bag. As you can see all the blind bags are very thin and perhaps the original Rarity mold would have been too wide for the machines, bags or any regulation that was used.

And that's where I end this special post on the mysteries of wave 1 blind bag early prototypes. If you want to comment on the subject, have your own theories or actually know more about the history of these, feel free to leave your comment below!

  1. There should be a blindbag Adagio as a pony. Plus, I think the necklaces the Dazzlings wear are the Elements of Disharmony.

    1. Sadly, these prototypes have not been mass-produced and I don't even know if these still exist at all. The wave 1 set however is not being produced anymore, but you might be able to find them on eBay or maybe an old store that didn't sell them all yet (very very very slim chance).

  4. 1. Applejack and Rainbow Dash don't have Pinkie Pie's eyes. They have regular eyes, with different styles of eyelashes.
    2. I think Fluttershy shared the mold because her mane was too long, and at the time they couldn't figure out a good way to design her.
