Target Lists Four G3 Retro Classic Ponies
The 3rd generation of My Little Pony started back in 2003, and when you think about it, that's already 16 years ago! Whether this falls in the 'retro' category is up to personal preference, but what is sure is that four G3 re-releases are planned for this fall! Under the 'Retro Classic' line Applejack, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash will be released in their original G3 form according to listings that popped up on the Target website.
All ponies each come with a comb are listed for $8.49 with an MSRP of $9.99. And while they are marked as 'sold out', we didn't get any confirmations that they were available just yet. That's why we expect them to be available somewhere in the coming weeks.

Below we have more photos of all the ponies, as well as the listings and some more background information on these figures.

Target Listings
Compared to the original G3 ponies all of them are inspired by their initial version/pose from 2003. This includes the symbol/cutie mark (as well as the symbol in their eyes), and hoof heart. Whether a magnet is also embedded in the hoofs is unknown. All of them can be seen in our G3 database (Applejack, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie & Rainbow Dash).

When looking at the UPC/EAN code we can confirm that these will be released by Basic Fun, just like the retro G1 ponies. And while we're talking about codes, the listings on the Target website also contain the TCIN codes for each pony (for those interested).

(Note that this post is a little late as we were hoping for pictures of the packaging, but since these didn't show up a week after first appearance we decided to share this news as-is)

  2. These are the ones I grew up with! Wysteria and Minty were my favorites.

  3. Okay. I embrace the rereleases of the G1 ponies. As they age, condition issues become more and more common, and their prices climb with demand. $10 is a little much for a common early G1, but it's nice to have one that's brand new. I've got a few. They're nice.
But G3s seem to be a lot more stable than G1s. I think it's the pearly plastic. They're newer and easier to find. All of these guys are incredibly common and, if you try hard enough, could be picked up for around $3 each. The least stable part is that pink, which is fairly hard to find intact, but can be done. If these guys are colorfast, they could be worth it.
Then there's the inaccuracies. Applejack's hair is striped, not this weird half-and-half weirdness. Rainbow Dash is ridiculously off. Even her 25th Anniversary McDonald's figure had a better reduced color selection (in the correct order)! And Pinkie should have iridescent tinsel. Whether these changes bother you (or if you prefer them!), I still see it as a shortcoming.
Still, I'll give credit where credit is due. They did retain Applejack's unique apple-shaped eye highlight, which is a small detail all too easy to overlook, as only two G3s and two G3.5s stray from having a circle, heart, or star. In fact, before I thrifted my own AJ, I thought she had a heart! And if, like the G1s, their heads aren't glued, they will be the first articulated variants of these character/pose combinations.
I have no doubt that these will be quality figures in their own right, but nothing really worth the price for me. I'll probably skip these, but I wish luck to all of you who want to hunt them down!
(Also, we need to drum up demand for reproductions of the Divine Shine ponies. I just got a Tangerine Twinkle this week and she's dissolved most of her glitter, and, to make things worse, all her pink hair came out, leaving the tinsel and purple perfectly intact and silky! These guys are cursed!)

    1. Just realized that there's one head mold. While I think Rainbow Dash's pose looks good with Pinkie Pie's pose's head, it still upsets me. I hope these are prototypes and will be fixed later!

    2. Okay, I've been staring at these guys a bit too hard for the past few days. I was hesitant to post another comment on my original since I had already posted one, but I guess it's better to be perceived as annoying than wrong.
I do believe the heads for each pose are different, if only slightly. It was probably how unlike the original the retro Rainbow Dash head was that made me conclude that it was identical to Pinkie Pie's. Even as a child, I noted how wide Rainbow Dash's head was in comparison to other G3 heads. I hadn't considered the possibility of this one being based on the articulated re-carve of the pose, which, without a doubt, has differences to the original simply due to being remade (the Diva pose was made so different that its articulated version is considered a different pose, so it's likely). I don't own any ponies in this pose with turning heads, so I kind of forgot that it was remade, or at least would be different if it was. If the articulated version was the basis for this pose, however, the head is still held higher than at least the articulated pose (I've never beheaded a pony in this pose to get a good look at the angle the stationary head would be at when facing forward). I quite like it for what it is; it's more like the Posey pose, one of my favorite G1 poses.
Another thing I've noticed in all my staring is that Rainbow Dash does, in fact, have all of her hair colors. The yellow blended in with the orange, and with the order of the colors being off, I just assumed it was excluded for some reason. Looking at it now, the green and orange being switched is more of a minor nitpick than a major issue, and could even be a screw-up with the prototype. Many G3s had minor hair color changes from their stock photos (Twilight Pink, for example, had her pink and orange switched) and I HOPE that's what's going on here.
Why? Well, my main problem with these was their redundancy for the price. With the slightly different pose and a body that seems a bit more on the cyan side than her early releases, Rainbow Dash is far from redundant and actually quite gorgeous. If I get any of these, it'll be her.
Despite them cherry-picking common G3s with the only reason being that they share names with G4s, I am a bit more optimistic about these than I was when I first saw them (as usually tends to happen when something sits at the top of this site for a while) and am looking forward to them!

  4. I was never an MLP fan until G4, but since then I've realized how pretty many of the originals/older ones were. Especially the neon ones. 8D Love some of the color combos. This Applejack is awesome. Fluttershy and Pinkie remind me of Cadence and Cheerilee respectively.

  5. So they're REEEALLY going back to the ol' classic G1-3 designs of the ponies now????.....

    1. As they should, ponies are more fitting than dogs for a brand called My Little Pony.

    3. Its about time. G4's design is absolutely horrible

  6. These specific ones are not my thing, that's for sure. The selected starting set only makes sense if they are planning on doing some "super set" of all ponies from the 80s to current that were inspired by another or grew into the current iteration. Not a bad idea to hit some new fans' nostalgia centers, but these four don't rock the Casbah.

Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie have over-saturated the franchise since they were released and became inducted into the "Core 7" when they got lazy with G3 releases.

If G3 is your thing I hope this is for you, but this is not for any MLP fans that crave the diversity that G1 had that the end of G3 and current G4 suffer from.

    1. G3 is my favourite generation, but I agree, the decision to keep focusing on the Mane 6 is... eh. If this was a true line to celebrate G3, it would've made sense to make the original 2003 ponies, or fan favourites like Star Catcher. Fluttershy and Applejack are totally irrelevant in this gen.

    2. Star Catcher would be an amazing choice for a retro release. She was released a few times, but tends to be hard to find at a price that reflects her abundance. Obviously, this is because she's gorgeous and, therefore, in high demand.
She's also quite fragile. Her raised designs attract rubs, and lose a lot of their impact when the paint comes off. Her wings crinkle and bend and tear. Her hair has tinsel and, I believe, fading pink (uncertain because I've seen it in many different shades, but never faded completely). I've even heard that sunlight tends to turn her green. I'd pay more than these guys cost for a perfectly mint Star Catcher, and I don't think I'm alone. With her wings, it would be likely she'd cost a bit more than a "basic" pony.
I'm not that optimistic that they'll release her. She has no G4 influenced by her, and her pose is a uniquely altered version of an already scarcely used pose. If they do release her, will she even be accurate? Will her hair still have the stripes? They've shown an aversion to tinsel with Pinkie Pie here, and although a lot of people don't like the texture, she'd lose a bit of her magic without it. I won't lie, though; I'd still buy her.

    3. Her hair might not fade much this time. And so many people want a dark pink version without tinsel.

    4. I'd love for them to make ponies. G3 is my second favorite gen. Hasbro has got to get off this mane suxx kick, but I'd gladly snag RD, as she was one of my first.
