Ossie and the Quest for the Worst MLP Fakies
When browsing the internet for My Little Pony products you find all the good and legit stuff first. But when you go beyond page 30 of Google and searching for shady marketplace website you will eventually get into the world of My Little Pony fakies. Of course eBay has plenty of fakies too, but this is usually only the surface of what you can find. Many of these marketplaces (like Taobao) don't have anti-counterfeiting on the top of their agendas, although Alibaba has had a major clean-up lately.
For the protection of everyone I will not share any links nor name websites, but rest assured that most of these fakies are only available when ordering thousands at the same time, which is usually done by equally shady retailers.
In this post I will discuss some of the more interesting fakies I have found over the past few weeks, mainly focusing on figures and plush. While there won't be a definite 'worst fakie' in this post, it was my actual goal during my search, skipping the other common and already known fakies.

So, after this brief introduction, head on down and enjoy my quest!

I start with a very common type of fakies: blind bags! Ebay is full of these and thankfully it's usually very easy to differentiate official from fake blind bags. However, as you can see in the image above the bootleg manufacturers are going more towards copying exact ponies. For example the Flower Wishes figure, which looks pretty good (but was never released with embedded glitter).

Over in the brushable category I spotted these off-looking unicolor brushables, based on more common fakie designs. The cutie marks of these are usually just stars, based on Twilight's mark. I don't know why, but the same body and mane color is just... weird...

Over to more ridiculous brushables with these short-legged-everypony-is-a-princess figures. While the bootleggers got the cutie marks and colors right with these figures, they totally screwed up with the bodies. While realistic princess designs for the mane 6 is fun to see, the short legs on these figures made it a humorous sight. Below you can see them in more detail, because there were plenty of listings and sellers for these! Oh, and they come in an open package with stolen artwork of Princess Luna and Celestia (who are not even included).

If a figure is not popular amongst fans and collectors then that;'s no guarantee it will not be copied. There is actually a pretty big collection of fake POP ponies called 'DIY'. There are at least 4 basics designs, but of course by changing wings and manes there plenty of figures to make. The only big difference to the basic POP ponies that I can spot is that these come mostly pre-built and that it seems that the body is solid, instead of two separate parts. The sets also feature sticker sheets and the big collection set also comes with a copied breezie locket.

The same egg-shaped packaging can be found with some of the fake blind bags, but also these fakies above. While at first sight these might look like regular fakies, pay some attention to the details on the middle fakie in the image above. Yes, those are not horns but giraffe ossicones (yes, that's what they're called, and no, my name is not based on that...)! While there has been a G1 giraffe, seeing these in G4 style is very surprising!

And as usual there are some fakies that are simply scary. Intriguing off-looking eyes, string-like hair and partly translucent bodies is not a good combination as you can see above. It almost looks like a set of custom figures, but after a short research it seems that these are manufactured in Mexico and are priced too low for customs.
Also, thanks to nogames for letting us know about these!

These figures might look very weird, but they're actually inspired by figures from Play Together and Plush Apple. The only think they didn't copy was... well.. proper colors for the ponies. While there are a few good ones among the complete set, the annoyed looking Twilight is far from it. It also looks like they've tried to create Fluttershy with the mold of Apple Bloom... Strange!

Moving on to a big warning for those looking who are looking for Funko POP figures. The two figures above look pretty much identical to the actual Funko figures, and most people could easily be tricked into buying these judging by the pictures above. The trigger for me to further investigate this was the fact that the sellers had literally thousands of these for sale, which is an instant fakie alarm.
The technique to identify these fakies from real ones is that the copied figures do not have the My Little Pony logo printed on the left foot, as is visible on official POP figures.

And of course there are more obvious Funko POP fakes too. While these have existed for a while, I don't remember the first wave of them having lights. What's also interesting to see is the brushable hair, which the original Funko POP figures do not have of course. Oh, and the 2nd pony of the first image has clothing buttons for eyes.

Besides the short-legged brushables from earlier, these chibi-like plushies are also available. The short legs match better with this design, but they're not as cute as you might imagine. The rest of the pony seems to be in normal proportions, and the manes are made of cheap felt.

And speaking of plush, there's also this bootlegged Aurora Princess Luna. While at first sight this too could go as an official figures, but the wings are misplaced and that the reflecting dots in the mane and tail are missing (and probably some more details too). What also differentiate this plush from the original is an embedded music box with a 25-second music loop, but I'm not sure which song.
Thanks to Ayu for letting us know more on this plush!

I saw these weird long plush A LOT. I'm not sure if plush like these are common in parts of Asia, or that this was just cheaper to make, but there are tons of sellers and designs of these. Most of these have head designs inspired by licensed plush manufacturers, combined with a long soft body and the name of the pony on it too. I wonder if there are even longer designs....

Yes there are, and they even feature other manes, but can they go even longer?

Ok, I won't push it any further....

And of course Pinkie Pie can be a pegasus if you're creating unlicensed plush, because why not. As far as I could find this Pinkie Pie is about 3 feet high, something you don't see every day. Below is an image of a similar Twilight Sparkle figure (and she's a proper alicorn), but the color of her coat is a tad too dark.

And this is just something random that I spotted: Black erasers with bad paper cut-outs of pony characters wrapped around them. Winner of the cheapest-way-to-brand-an-eraser-award if you'd ask me.

And last but not least: food! Yes while these look like either erasers or charms they're actually candy! Probably very sweet and filled with chemicals I wouldn't want to touch in my life, but at least they look a bit like the mane 6... -ish....

So, that was my quest for the worst MLP fakies out there. While I don't think I found the absolute worst fakie, I found some pretty bad and interesting ones that are currently going around online.

  7. Hi, I was wondering does anyone know on eBay that the 'single' figures that come in one packet are real or a fake, as there are many of them like Octavia and other hard ones to find, also I have an exclusive mlp princess glittery celestia, ordered from a famous pop company, but she has the hasbro and funko pop trade mark with all the little details on the bottom of her, but no left hoof mark that I can spot, thank you everyone xxx p.s I this site, I always come here daily and you are doing an amazing and fantastic job! 8. Ossie please please PLEASE make an MLP fake Merch list! I know that nobody would ever want to collect those nasty toys but it's really funny to look at some of them. PS who in their right mind would put CHEMICALS in candy?!! I mean, do they WANT to poison us?!!!

    1. I think it would be impossible to make considering there are thousands alone on Taobao.

    2. There are a few reasons why we don't want to start one, including what Ayu said and the fact that we want to keep our database filled with licensed products only. In no way do we want to encourage buying or collecting fakies (and risking getting in trouble with Hasbro). For now we'll just stick to occasional posts like these.
And of course I don't know what kind of chemicals and other stuff they put in the candy, but if they don't bother about licensing their product, how can we know for sure they bother about food safety?
