Vondels Sunny & Izzy Christmas Ornament Review

A couple of weeks ago we were happy to report that My Little Pony G5 glass ornaments from our own country were announced and coming this September. Aside from information, we are happy to report that we also got review ornaments from Vondels, which we can finally show to you.

We received a single box with the Sunny Starscout and Izzy Moonbow ornaments. Good to point out here is that retail figures are individually packed. Aside from these two, there is also a Pipp ornaments in their G5 range, but that was not available at the moment.

A big difference with other licensed ornaments is that these are mouth-blown glass ornaments, which gives them a distinctive look and the 'bulb' under their body. Keeping that in mind it's impressive that they managed to get all the details on these figures, which is mostly like the result of a good mold and hand painting afterwards. Comparing plastic ornaments with these is a bit unfair, but if you're a fan of artisanal ornaments, we're sure you can appreciate the look of these. And truth be told, it's a bit hard to make two-dimensional photos of these ornaments, as part of the charm is in their shape, but we tried our best with photos in daylight and in our light box.

If we do compare them, there is an obvious downside to be mentioned: glass breaks easily. If you have a household with careless pets, small kids or general clumsiness, you either need to be very careful hanging these in your tree, or keep them in a safe place as decoration. We were handling these with care, but you can feel how thin and fragile they are.

Aside from the paint, Vondels also royally sprinkled the ornaments with glitter, used both as decoration and to define lines on the figure. While that looks nice in combination with candlelight or Christmas lights, the glitter used in the mouth of Sunny and Izzy gives them a weird look. We didn't attempt it yet, but personally we'd prefer to remove that line of glitter.

What does look good on them, is the cutie mark. Of course it's too small and precise to be done by hand, so we expect these to be transferred on the ornaments instead. And because they're intended to dangle in your Christmas tree, the cutie mark is visible on both sides.

And talking about dangling, the ornaments come with a stylish gold hook and cord to hang them in your tree, and also attached is a small charm with the Vondels logo on it.

Thanks to Vondels for sending these over for the review. Know that are available since September 1st on their own site, but their ornaments are also available at select retailers worldwide.

  1. Wow, they look much better in person! ...Or, I assume they do. Well, at least these photos prove that the stock images really didn't do them justice. I love how they have a subtle pearly sheen to them. I may have to look for these, though they won't adorn my tree... Cats. We have cats. I would rather not see these meet their fate at the paws of them!
