Basic Fun Reveals 2023 Line-Up: Celestial Ponies + Blind Boxes

Big news coming from the 2023 Preview & 2022 Holiday Market this week where Basic Fun revealed their line-up for next year. This is all centered around the 40th anniversary of My Little Pony (yes, the last celebration is already 4 years ago) and included in their plans is something very special: the never released Celestial Ponies!

Those familiar with G1 prototypes and unreleased ponies might have heard about the Celestial Ponies (a.k.a. Fancy Swirl Ponies) and perhaps even saw the prototype that surfaced earlier this year. It's a big surprise that Basic Fun is going to release ponies that have never been released before, and they seem to have taken inspiration from the original artwork that was made for them. At their stand they showed 3 out of 4 ponies from that artwork, and it's uncertain whether the 4th pony will also be part of the line-up.

Another big announcement is an upcoming set of mini figures that will be released in a 6-pack and as blind boxes. Included are several G1 ponies as well as a Spike figure, making a total of 7 different figures. These figures have a molded mane, but brushable tail. They appear to be around 2"-2.5" tall.

When looking at the display, we count 14 different ponies, whereas aforementioned sets only count up to 13. Glory seems to be shown twice, but with slight different colors. This could be a prototype design or a chase variant.

Also spotted are new G1 retro plush with Firefly, Glory and Moondancer. They appear very fluffy and around 7" tall.

And finally Basic Fun also revealed the re-release of the 6 collector ponies, this time with packaging to celebrate the 40th anniversary. Other than the packaging there's no indication of other differences at this moment.

Many thanks to xcanadensis on Instagram for the photos!

  1. The blind box pony display is a very early prototype, they actually mixed up Starflower and Moondancer’s names on it! Ember and Spike are indeed the chase figures. Strangely he picked up Cotton Candy to show me Ember but explained they will be making a baby pony sculpt! There are 6 ponies that come with the collectible Rescue at Midnight Castle set and more are in the pipeline. I asked about the pearly and he said she goes to one of the collector sets but I think I may have confused him because she clearly doesn’t. I honestly think they said 7 varieties on the box because they had 7 polished stock images

  7. Can we get them to re-release some sea ponies?! It's gross cleaning out 40 year old moldy bath toys and having stains that won't go away on the white ones. I would love to open a new box with a sea pony!

  11. I would love either Basic Fun or HQG1C to make a Lady Lessons. I think she only ever appeared in the UK comic but I'm sure I had some merch with her on it (probably comic freebies).

  13. I'm only interested in the classic 80's style ones so I do hope they release more. Was a bit of a let down when for the 40th anniversary they just released some ponies that has already been done. Pre ordered those celestials though! :)
